Monetizing an Unreal Engine mobile game: ads and IAP

Unity has dozens of ready-made monetisation SDKs; Unreal has fewer, so mobile teams need to plan their stack more carefully. Here is what Unreal supports out of the box, how ads are usually added, and the consent and testing steps that trip teams up.

The short answer

Unreal Engine supports in-app purchases on Android and iOS through its online subsystems for Google Play and iOS, so standard purchases need no third-party SDK. For ads, the main options are AppLovin's official MAX plugin for Unreal (for Unreal Engine 5.2 and later), Epic's documented AdMob support on Android, community plugins on Fab, or integrating native ad SDKs yourself. Plan consent and Apple's tracking prompt from the start, and test purchases with store test accounts.

Why monetisation is different in Unreal

Most mobile ad networks and analytics tools ship a Unity SDK first. Unreal has a smaller selection of maintained plugins, so the stack needs choosing deliberately, and sometimes native integration work. Teams that pick Unreal for mobile usually do so for visual quality or existing Unreal skills; see our Unreal Engine 5 on mobile and Unity vs Unreal articles.

In-app purchases

  1. Enable the online subsystem for each platform (Google Play on Android, iOS on Apple devices) in the project configuration.
  2. Create products in Google Play Console and App Store Connect, noting each product ID and whether it is consumable.
  3. Use Unreal's purchase nodes or C++ interfaces to query products, make purchases and handle the success and failure results.
  4. Implement restoring non-consumable purchases, which stores expect.
  5. For valuable items, validate receipts on your server rather than trusting the device.

Purchases do not work in plain development builds; upload builds to Google Play test tracks with licence testers, and use sandbox accounts on iOS.

Also plan the store side: prices per country, tax handling by the stores, refund behaviour, and what happens to a consumable if the app closes mid-purchase. Unfinished transactions should be completed the next time the game starts, so players never pay without receiving their item. Since US court rulings now allow links to outside payments on both stores, some games also add a web shop; see the future of mobile gaming.

Ads: the options

OptionWhat it isConsider when
AppLovin MAX Unreal pluginOfficial plugin from AppLovin for its MAX mediation platform; Unreal Engine 5.2 or later, distributed via FabYou want mediation across many ad networks with a maintained plugin
AdMob on AndroidEpic's documentation covers AdMob ads on AndroidSimple Android banner or interstitial needs
Community plugins on FabThird-party wrappers around Google Mobile Ads and othersYou need a specific network; check SDK versions and update history
Native integrationIntegrate the ad SDK directly using Unreal Plugin Language (Android) and iOS frameworksYou need full control or an unsupported network

Mediation lets several ad networks compete for each impression, which usually raises revenue; our guide to ad mediation explains bidding and waterfalls.

Consent and tracking

  • EEA and UK: personalised ads need user consent through a consent management platform; Google's User Messaging Platform supports the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework.
  • iOS: tracking users across other companies' apps requires the App Tracking Transparency prompt; add SKAdNetwork identifiers for your ad networks in the project settings.
  • Children: games for kids have stricter ad rules; see our kids game rules guide.

Which ad formats to use

FormatBest useWatch out for
Rewarded videoOptional reward for watching, such as extra livesMake rewards worth it, but not game-breaking
InterstitialFull-screen ads at natural breaksToo frequent hurts retention
BannerLow-value, always-on placementsCan clash with UI and reduce perceived quality
App openShown when the app resumesEasily annoying; use sparingly

Common pitfalls

  • Plugins lagging behind ad SDK updates, causing store warnings or crashes; check update history before choosing.
  • Initialising an SDK twice when mediation already initialises its adapters.
  • Forgetting purchase restore or receipt validation.
  • Testing ads in production with real ads, which can get the ad account banned; use test ads and test devices.
  • No analytics on ad impressions and revenue, so placements cannot be tuned.

A typical Unreal mobile monetisation stack

LayerCommon choice
In-app purchasesUnreal online subsystems for Google Play and iOS, with server-side receipt validation for valuable items
Ads and mediationAppLovin MAX Unreal plugin, or a maintained plugin for your chosen network
ConsentA consent platform supporting IAB TCF for the EEA and UK, plus the ATT prompt on iOS
AnalyticsAn analytics SDK with Unreal support, or events sent to your own backend
Remote configServer-side values for prices, rewards and ad frequency, so you can tune without app updates

Lock the stack early and build a small test map that exercises every purchase and ad placement. Running that map on real devices before each release catches most integration problems before players do.

FAQ

Quick answers ❓

Does Unreal Engine support in-app purchases?

Yes. Unreal's online subsystems for Google Play and iOS support store purchases, with Blueprint and C++ interfaces to query products and make purchases, so standard IAP needs no third-party SDK.

How do I add ads to an Unreal Engine mobile game?

Common options are AppLovin's official MAX plugin for Unreal Engine 5.2 and later, Epic's documented AdMob support on Android, community plugins on Fab, or integrating native ad SDKs yourself.

Is there an AdMob SDK for Unreal?

Google does not publish an official AdMob SDK for Unreal. Epic documents AdMob ads on Android, and community plugins on Fab wrap Google Mobile Ads; AppLovin MAX can also mediate AdMob demand.

How do I test in-app purchases in Unreal?

Upload builds to Google Play test tracks with licence testers on Android, and use sandbox accounts on iOS. Purchases do not work in plain development builds.

Do Unreal mobile games need consent for ads?

Yes, where the law requires it. In the EEA and UK, personalised ads need consent through a consent platform, and on iOS cross-app tracking requires Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt.
