Game development trends for 2027: what to plan for

The changes that will shape games in 2027 are already visible: new payment rules, AI with disclosure, engine migrations, new XR platforms and big shifts in who owns and funds games. Here is what studios and anyone commissioning a game should plan for.

The short answer

The trends to plan for in 2027 are already in motion: open mobile payments and web shops after the 2025 US rulings against Apple and Google, AI in production with disclosure and consent rules, engine migrations such as Unity's move away from the Built-in pipeline, a more diverse XR landscape, growing web and instant-play games, major ownership changes such as the EA take-private, Gulf investment, and stricter children's privacy rules. Teams that plan for these now will spend less and launch faster.

1. Mobile payments open up

After an April 2025 court order, Apple allowed US apps to link to outside purchases, and Google Play had to allow alternative billing and external links in the US from October 2025. Expect more games to add web shops and direct relationships with players in 2027. Plan your payment flows, pricing and analytics for both store and web purchases. See the future of mobile gaming.

2. AI everywhere, with rules

AI tools are now part of most pipelines, from concept art to testing. The rules are catching up: Steam requires AI content disclosure, and the 2025 SAG-AFTRA agreement sets consent and pay terms for performers' digital replicas. In 2027, expect clients and players to ask how AI was used. Keep records of tools and licences and disclose clearly. See AI voice for games and AI in the art pipeline.

3. Engine migrations

Unity 6.5 deprecated the Built-in Render Pipeline, so many Unity games will move to URP over the next few years. Unity also ended its own Multiplay server hosting in March 2026, so online games need portable hosting. Godot 4.6 continues to mature for 2D and smaller 3D projects. Budget migrations deliberately rather than as emergencies; see the Unity 6 upgrade guide and URP shader conversion.

4. XR diversifies

XR is no longer one headset. Meta Quest remains the largest consumer VR platform, Android XR arrived with Samsung Galaxy XR, Apple updated Vision Pro with the M5 chip, and smart glasses opened to developers. In enterprise, Meta ended Quest for Business sales in February 2026, changing how organisations manage devices. Build XR in engines that target several platforms, and design for passthrough and mixed reality. See Android XR and Vision Pro development.

5. Web and instant play

Browser games and instant-play formats keep growing, helped by better web engines and distribution through messaging apps and portals. They suit casual games and brand campaigns that need zero-install reach. See web games in 2026.

6. Ownership and funding shifts

The completion of the PIF-led take-private of Electronic Arts in August 2026 was one of the largest deals in games history, and Gulf investment continues through Saudi Arabia's national gaming strategy. Funding for independent studios remains selective. Expect more co-development, outsourcing and partnership deals as large companies restructure and smaller ones stay lean. See the Saudi gaming market and funding an indie game.

7. Children's privacy tightens

The amended COPPA Rule has applied in full since April 2026, and the stores enforce their own family policies. Games likely to be played by children need privacy-first SDK choices and age-appropriate design from the start. See rules for kids' games.

8. Store technical requirements keep rising

Google Play required API level 36 for new apps and updates from August 2026, and Apple updated its age ratings. Every year brings new requirements, so keep engines and SDKs current and check store rules at the start of each release cycle. See our store submission checklist.

9. Handheld PC play

Handheld gaming PCs, led by Steam Deck, make controller support, readable UI and power-efficient performance standard expectations for PC games. See Steam Deck Verified.

What is not changing

Fundamentals still decide success: a fun core loop proven early, scope a team can finish, polish, performance on real devices, and a launch plan that starts months before release. Trends change the tools and the rules around a game, not the need for it to be good.

FAQ

Quick answers ❓

What are the biggest game development trends for 2027?

Open mobile payments and web shops, AI in production with disclosure and consent rules, engine migrations, more diverse XR platforms, growing web games, ownership and funding shifts, stricter children's privacy and rising store requirements.

Will mobile games use web shops in 2027?

More are expected to. US rulings in 2025 let iPhone apps link to outside purchases and required Google Play to allow alternative billing in the US, making web shops more attractive.

Do games need to disclose AI use?

On Steam, yes: developers disclose pre-generated and live-generated AI content. Union agreements such as the 2025 SAG-AFTRA deal also set consent and pay terms for performers' AI replicas.

Should Unity games migrate to URP?

Most should plan to. Unity 6.5 deprecated the Built-in Render Pipeline, so planning a migration deliberately is cheaper than doing it in a rush later.

Which XR platforms matter in 2027?

Meta Quest for consumer VR, Android XR with Samsung Galaxy XR, Apple Vision Pro for premium and enterprise uses, and smart glasses for new kinds of apps. Cross-platform engines help reach several.
