The short answer
Building for Apple Vision Pro is worth it in 2026 when the audience is premium or professional: enterprise training and visualisation, retail and product experiences, high-end entertainment, or a port of an existing Unity XR app. The M5 model launched in October 2025 from $3,499, which keeps the user base small. Developers can build natively with SwiftUI and RealityKit or with Unity and PolySpatial, which requires a paid Unity plan. For mass-market games, Meta Quest and phones still reach far more players.
The hardware in 2026
- The Vision Pro with M5 chip went on sale on 22 October 2025, starting at $3,499, and shipped with visionOS 26. Check Apple's site for current pricing and availability.
- Input: eye tracking and hand gestures as standard, plus support for PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers and game controllers for games that need precision.
- High-resolution passthrough makes mixed reality the default way people use it.
visionOS app types
| Type | What it is | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Window | A 2D app floating in the user's space | Companion apps, dashboards, menus |
| Volume | 3D content in a bounded box alongside other apps | Board games, product viewers, toys |
| Full immersive space | The app takes over the surroundings, fully or partly | Games, training simulations, environments |
Native or Unity?
| Native (SwiftUI, RealityKit) | Unity with PolySpatial | |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | Apple-only app with deep platform integration | Existing Unity project or multi-platform XR |
| Licence | Apple developer tools | visionOS support requires Unity Pro, Enterprise or Industry |
| Strengths | Best platform fit, latest features first | Reuse code and content across Quest, Android XR and Vision Pro |
| Watch out for | No reuse on other headsets | Some Unity features behave differently in the shared space |
If you already ship on Meta Quest or plan for Android XR, Unity usually makes Vision Pro an extension rather than a separate project.
WebXR on Vision Pro
Since visionOS 2, Safari supports WebXR immersive VR sessions by default, so browser-based VR can reach Vision Pro users without an app. AR sessions (immersive-ar) are not supported, so web-based mixed reality is not an option on Vision Pro today. Our guide to WebXR in 2026 covers browser support across devices.
Where Vision Pro makes sense
- Enterprise training and visualisation: organisations buying a handful of headsets for high-value training or design review.
- Retail and product experiences: showrooms, configurators and premium brand experiences.
- Premium entertainment: immersive films, experiences and games for early adopters.
- Ports: adding Vision Pro support to a successful Quest or mobile AR app.
Where it does not (yet)
Free-to-play or mass-market games that need millions of players. The installed base is small, so revenue potential is limited compared with phones and Meta Quest. For most VR games, Quest remains the first platform; see our VR development cost guide.
Porting an existing XR app
Many Vision Pro projects start as ports. A Unity app already running on Meta Quest or mobile AR can often be brought to visionOS with PolySpatial, but expect work in three areas. Input changes from controllers or touch to eyes and hands, so menus and interactions need redesigning around look-and-pinch. Rendering in the shared space uses RealityKit through PolySpatial, so some custom shaders and effects need rewriting or simplifying. And the app needs to behave well alongside other windows and the user's real room, rather than assuming it owns the whole view.
A short technical assessment of the existing project, listing shaders, plugins and interaction systems, usually shows within days whether a port is straightforward or closer to a rebuild.
Enterprise deployment
For businesses, distribution matters as much as development. Apps can be published on the App Store, distributed privately to an organisation, or managed with device management tools. Plan how headsets will be set up, shared, cleaned and charged, and how content will be updated, because those operational details often decide whether an enterprise pilot becomes a rollout. Our article on enterprise VR training ROI covers building the business case.
Design considerations
- Comfort first: avoid forced movement; use teleport or stationary experiences for most users.
- Design for eyes and hands: large targets, look-and-pinch interactions, clear feedback.
- Respect the user's space: content should sit comfortably in real rooms.
- Sessions are often shorter than on consoles; design for drop-in use.
Testing without many headsets
Apple's visionOS simulator in Xcode covers layout and basic interaction, and Unity projects can be previewed in the editor, but comfort, eye-and-hand input and real rooms can only be judged on a device. Most teams work with one or two headsets and schedule on-device test sessions every week rather than relying on the simulator until the end.
Budget and timeline
A focused Vision Pro experience, such as a product viewer or a single-scene demo, fits our VR and AR packages starting at $999 for a proof of concept and $2,999 for a complete app; multi-scenario training and multiplayer are quoted individually. Porting an existing Unity XR app is usually faster than building from scratch.

Quick answers ❓
Is it worth developing for Apple Vision Pro?
Yes for enterprise training, retail and product experiences, premium entertainment and ports of existing XR apps. For mass-market games, the small installed base makes Meta Quest and phones better first platforms.
Can you use Unity for Vision Pro?
Yes, through Unity's visionOS support and PolySpatial. Unity documents that this requires Unity Pro, Enterprise or Industry.
Does Vision Pro support game controllers?
Yes. Alongside eye and hand input, Vision Pro supports PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers and game controllers, which helps games that need precise input.
Does Vision Pro support WebXR?
Safari on visionOS supports WebXR immersive VR sessions by default since visionOS 2. Immersive AR sessions are not supported.
How much does Apple Vision Pro cost?
The M5 model launched on 22 October 2025 starting at $3,499. Check Apple's site for current pricing in your country.
