The number that matters most is not the GPU
A 40 percent faster GPU makes headlines. For games, memory bandwidth is often the more interesting figure. A lot of mobile rendering is limited not by how fast the GPU computes but by how fast data moves to and from it: textures, geometry, frame buffers. More bandwidth helps the whole pipeline breathe, particularly at high resolutions and high frame rates.
120Hz is a budget, not a feature
At 60 frames per second you have 16.7 milliseconds to produce each frame. At 120 you have 8.3. A faster chip gives you headroom, but halving your frame budget is still halving your frame budget. Games that feel smooth at 120Hz are designed for it, not switched to it.
And sustained matters more than peak. A phone that renders 120 frames per second for two minutes and then throttles feels worse than one that holds a steady 60. Always test long sessions, not benchmarks.
Why you still should not design for this phone
This is the part people get wrong. The iPhone 18 Pro is the top of the range and it is brand new. Your players are overwhelmingly on older, cheaper, slower devices, and they will be for years.
The right way to use new flagship hardware:
- Design and budget for a mid-range device that a large share of your audience actually owns.
- Use the flagship as headroom: higher resolution, higher frame rate, extra effects, all as optional tiers.
- Detect capability, do not assume it. Offer a quality setting or pick sensible defaults per device.
A game that runs beautifully on an iPhone 18 Pro and stutters on a three-year-old phone has a smaller audience, not a better one.

For studios, the practical shift is that the ceiling for optional high-end modes keeps rising, and on-device AI features get more viable because of the Neural Engine and GPU accelerators.
