The shape is the story
From Apple's tech specs:
- Outer display: 5.4 inches, 1398 by 2034 pixels at 460 ppi.
- Inner display: 7.6 inches, 1878 by 2670 pixels at 430 ppi.
- Both with ProMotion, adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz.
Now compare the proportions. The iPhone 18 Pro's screen is about 2.17 to 1. The iPhone Duo's outer screen is about 1.45 to 1, and the inner screen about 1.42 to 1. Both are far squarer than any iPhone before them โ and close enough to each other that your layout does not have to change shape dramatically when the phone opens.
What breaks
Layouts built for tall phones. A game designed around a long, thin screen will either show large bars or stretch in ways that look wrong. The Duo exposes every assumption that a phone is tall.
Fixed-position UI. Buttons anchored to screen corners suddenly sit in very different places relative to the play area. Anchor UI to safe areas and design for variable aspect ratios, not specific devices.
Camera framing. A squarer screen shows more of the world vertically and less horizontally, relative to width. Games that rely on seeing far ahead horizontally need a sensible rule for how the camera adapts.
What gets better
A 7.6-inch squarish canvas is closer to a small tablet, which suits genres that feel cramped on phones: strategy, puzzle, card and board games, simulation, anything with a map. It also gives room for controls that do not cover the action.
Unfolding mid-game
The feature players will expect is continuity: open the phone and the game carries on, at the new size, without restarting or losing progress. Handle the resolution change as a normal event, re-layout the UI, and do not tie game logic to screen dimensions.
Because the two screens are close in proportion, this is gentler than on foldables where the inner and outer screens are very different shapes. Worth testing anyway, especially mid-animation and mid-input.
Touch and thermals
The inner display is wide enough that thumbs reach less of it in two-handed play. Put frequent controls near the lower edges and keep less frequent ones further in. Apple also describes a vapor chamber in the Duo intended to sustain gaming performance โ but as always, test long sessions on the real device.
Should you optimise for it now?
Honestly, most games should not do anything special yet. Apple lists pre-orders from October 16 and availability from October 23, 2026, at $1,999 and up, so the installed base will start small.
What is worth doing now, because it pays off everywhere: support flexible aspect ratios, anchor UI to safe areas, and handle a resolution change without restarting. Do those and your game works properly on the Duo, on iPads, and on every foldable that follows.
