What VR development actually costs

Quest game, training simulator, or virtual showroom — here's what drives the budget, what the realistic ranges look like, and where teams waste money.

Why VR quotes vary so wildly

Ask five studios what a VR app costs and you'll get five numbers an order of magnitude apart, because "VR app" describes everything from a single-room product viewer to a multiplayer training platform. The honest answer is that three things drive almost all of the cost: how much 3D content you need, whether it runs on a standalone headset, and whether more than one person is in the scene at the same time. Everything else is detail.

Cost driver 1: the 3D content

This is usually the biggest line item and the one clients underestimate. A VR scene needs every surface modelled, textured and lit, because the user can walk up and put their face against any of it. Reusing environments across levels, buying and adapting quality asset packs, and keeping the art style stylised rather than photoreal are the three most effective ways to cut this cost without the result feeling cheap.

Cost driver 2: standalone vs PCVR

A Meta Quest headset runs on mobile-class hardware. Hitting a stable 72–90 frames per second there is real engineering work: draw-call budgets, baked lighting, aggressive level-of-detail, and texture atlasing. PCVR lets you spend far more on visuals but shrinks your audience to people with a gaming PC. Building for Quest first and scaling up is almost always the cheaper path to an audience, and it is what we recommend to most clients.

Cost driver 3: multiplayer

Single-user VR is a self-contained app. The moment two people share a space you need networking, state synchronisation, voice, session management and servers — plus a much larger QA surface, because now you have to test what happens when someone's headset dies mid-session. Multiplayer is worth it when shared presence is the point, as in team training; it is expensive when bolted on as a nice-to-have.

Realistic ranges

For a focused single-user experience — a product configurator, a guided walkthrough, one training scenario — expect a small project measured in weeks, and our Spark and Launch packages ($999 and $2,999) cover the tighter end of that scope. A polished Quest game or a multi-scenario training platform with analytics and multiplayer is a multi-month production quoted individually under our Enterprise track. The gap between those two is almost entirely content volume and multiplayer, not hourly rates.

Where teams waste money

Three patterns, all avoidable. Building photoreal art for a headset that cannot render it, so it gets rebuilt in a cheaper style halfway through. Skipping a comfort pass and discovering at launch that testers feel sick, which means reworking locomotion. And speccing multiplayer before validating that anyone wants the single-user version. A two-week prototype on real hardware kills all three risks for a fraction of what discovering them later costs.
